Abstract

Abstract Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Word of God, of his boundless love, became what we are that he might make us what he himself is. (Irenaeus, Adversus haereses) My immediate purpose in this and the next two chapters is to prepare the way for the heart of the book: the systematic chapters on Christ’ s being and saving work. Over the last two millennia various church teachers and writers have addressed in depth most of the central christological issues. It is at our peril that we neglect their discussions and conclusions.
