Abstract

Albert Deane Richardson juggled several roles in addition to his work as Kansas Territory correspondent for the Boston Journal, New England's most widely circulated daily newspaper. Richardson, an ardent abolitionist, boosted Free State settlement, ran for a seat in the territory's Free State legislature, denounced slavery in speeches throughout the territory, and scrutinized Missouri Border Ruffians' threats to Free State settlers in his regular letters from Kansas during the territory's anti-slavery struggle in 1857and 1858. Richardson's detailed reports and commentary made him a vital producer of news and opinion in the information ecosystem of abolitionism, while the Journal amplified his voice throughout New England through its wide regional circulation and across the North via the exchange system.
