Abstract

A new chapter in the European space business opened in June with the successful launch of the first Ariane 4 launch vehicle. Although the flight was intended primarily as a demonstration of the new technology, it carried over 3.5 tonnes of satellite hardware into geostationary transfer orbit: Europe's Meteosat P2 weather satellite, the PanAmSat-1 communications satellite and the AMSAT IIIC amateur radio satellite.
