Abstract

‘Miss India is a platform for a girl to do whatever she wants,’ explained Avantika, an 18-year-old contestant at the annual Miss India beauty pageant. Although the ‘anything’ she mentions usually means Bollywood stardom, many Indian girls believe that the pageant grants its participants life-transforming opportunities to enter social arenas to which they would otherwise never have access. Amidst India’s rapid economic deregulation and subsequent influx of international media, many Indians refer to their Miss India pageant winners, seven of whom have gone on to win the Miss Universe and Miss World titles, as their country’s ‘global ambassadors’.KeywordsYoung WomanSexual HarassmentSocial MobilityStructural AdjustmentMiss WorldThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
