Abstract

Column editor’s note: In the previous column [1], I described some of the issues surrounding image compression for the primary interpretation and secondary review of imaging data by referring physicians. Image compression is also used in teleradiology. This is an important topic because it has significant impact on the cost of picture archiving and communication system (PACS) implementation and must be balanced against image quality and performance concerns. I have invited commentary on this topic from a leading expert on radiology informatics, Eliot Siegel, MD.
