Abstract

Peritonitis is dened as inammation of the peritoneal cavity, caused by a number of etiological agents including bacteria, fungi, viruses, chemical irritants and foreign bodies. The sequence of both local and systemic events that occurs following the peritoneal insult represents a comparatively constant response to a variety of injurious agents. However, the clinical aspects, specically, the management of peritonitis is inuenced signicantly by the etiology of the infective process.
