Abstract
The graphical user interface (GUI) used by Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) and web-based surveys offers researchers several options for inputting numeric data. Users can enter numeric values by typing a number, dragging an analog slider, or clicking a radio button. Because data entry is a ubiquitous task in modern society, researchers from many fields have explored ways to improve the efficiency of user interaction with input interfaces. We address a simple question: Is it faster to click, type, or drag? Results from two randomized experiments indicate that clicking is the fastest entry method followed by typing. In contrast, dragging is the slowest of the three interfaces.
