Abstract

In fiscal year 2003/2004, the Washoe County Library System embarked on a yearlong trial to determine if purchasing books, using a prescribed set of criteria, would be more cost-effective than interlibrary loan. Book orders were sent to the Collection Development department, and records were kept of the cost, titles and dates…. In December 2004, book circulations and the Dewey Decimal call numbers were added to the data. Evaluating this data, the mean cost per title, average circulation per book, area of interest most often requested and how many books were assigned to each library were determined and compared with interlibrary loan costs and benefits. We concluded that books purchased, following the established criteria, are more cost-effective than interlibrary loan.
