Abstract

Dear Doctor, You may be aware of articles in a Sunday newspaper alleging that doctors in some countries of the European Community continue to practise after they have died. The paper suggests that in parts of Europe posthumous practice is a common way of exploiting tax loopholes. Indeed, it claims to have found group practices in which only one of the names outside the surgery belonged to a living doctor. Following these articles, the General Medical Council received letters from patients' organisations and members of parliament asking what measures are in place to ensure that this does not happen here.
