Abstract

The modal structure of a slab waveguide filled with a nematic liquid crystal is studied in detail as a function of an externally applied magnetic field. TM modes are studied in two geometries of practical interest. TE modes cannot be supported in the geometries considered in this paper. The electromagnetic and the liquid-crystal reorientation problems are solved exactly in steady-state conditions. Several possible applications of this hybrid device in integrated and guided optics are also discussed.
