Abstract

This article proposes a point cloud segmentation method by merely relying on the spatial and echo characteristics of the point cloud of the terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Firstly, terrain point cloud and off-terrain point cloud will be separated according to their own spatial characteristics. Then further segmentation to the terrain point cloud part will be done based on the intensity of the echo energy or the reflectance of the echo of the target object. Results of the experiment carried out prove that: (1) progressive TIN can well segment terrain and off-terrain points; (2) segmentation by echo reflectance will achieve a more detailed segmentation of high precision.
