Abstract

A new superconductive thallium cuprate, TlBa 1.6La 2.4Cu 2O 9±δ has been isolated. The structure of this oxide has been studied by HREM and powder X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the space group I4/mmm with a=3.8110(2) A ̊ and c=31.556(2) A ̊ . The structure consists of a regular intergrowth of single and double rock salt layers with single perovskite layers. It can be described as a regular intergrowth of La 2CuO 4- and TlBa 2CuO 5-type structures. Very few crystals exhibit extended defects. The magnetic susceptibility measurements show a T c of 35 K for the as-synthesized material, which can be increased up to 42 K by Ar/H 2 annealing at low temperature.
