Abstract

1. The outstanding contrastive feature of Tlahuitoltepec Mixel verbs is the presence of six distinctive sets of forms marking first, second, and third persons. Choice of one set versus another distinguishes actor oriented (AO) constructions from goal oriented (GO) constructions, and from subject oriented (SO) constructions. At the same time, choice of a given set further distinguishes two contrasting moods of each of the above: nonconjunct (NC) from conjunct (C).2 Imperative verbs do not take a person set nor are they distinguished as to orientation and mood. In this fashion seven contrasting constructions or SYNTAGMEMES3 are distinguished.
