Abstract

Crack-Healing Ability of Y2Ti2O7–Y2TiO5–TiN Composite In article number 2100979, Son Thanh Nguyen, Ayahisa Okawa, Tadachika Nakayama, and co-workers develop a ceramic-based nanocomposite with renewable self-healing ability. First, the composite is heat-treated in nitrogen atmosphere (red molecules) and the surface is covered by titanium nitride (yellow). Then, owing to oxidation (blue molecules represent oxygen) the surface turns to titanium oxide (gray), and the crack is healed by volume expansion. The self-healing function can be renewed after each thermal cycle. Cover image by Ayahisa Okawa.
