Abstract

The refinement effect of titanium carbonitride on pure aluminum was investigated by adding the mixed powder of Ti and TiCN. Comparing with adding Ti or TiCN separately, 0.3% addition of the mixed refiner of Ti and TiCN has better grain refinement performance and the grain size of pure aluminium can decrease to 120 μm. With the prolongation of holding time, the pure aluminum with TiCN/Ti showed excellent anti-fading performance which can still maintain fine equiaxed grains (180 μm) after holding 8 h. The charictaristics of refined specimens were revealed by OM, FSEM, XRD, and DCS test and the results suggest that TiCN with Ti-rich layer in aluminum melt can reduce undercooling and act as heterogeneous nucleus of α-Al. The refinement mechanism of the composite refiner is the formation of Ti-rich layer on the interface of TiCN which promotes the nucleation of α-Al.
