Abstract

It is now known that in addition to secreting such primary mediators of immediate hypersensitivity as histamine, tissue mast cells actively metabolize arachidonic acid with resultant synthesis of potent leukotriene secondary mediators. New investigative attention is also being devoted to the “sentinel” role of the mast cells suggested by their localization at interfaces with the external environment.
