Abstract

While the contribution of native plants to the ecological balance and to the preservation of the environment has been recognized, development of methods for tissue culture of native plants for propagation and conservation is lagging behind. Tissue culture technology can be utilized for the conservation and mass propagation of selected native perennial plants that cannot be propagated on a large-scale by means of seeds and cuttings. Certain genotypes of Rhan terium epapposum, Ochradenus baccatus, Nitraria retusa and Lysium shawii were selected, and tissue culture technology was developed because of their potential for use in urban landscaping and in desert revegetation.
