Abstract

SummaryTraumatic open globe injuries with intraocular foreign bodies (IOFBs) may result in severe visual loss depending on a number of factors including elevated risk for endophthalmitis, toxicity to the IOFB material, and postoperative proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Surgical removal of an IOFB is perhaps the most unpredictable surgery, especially in the presence of media haze, requiring intense preoperative workup and patient counseling. There is still significant controversy in the management of IOFBs, particularly the timing and method of surgery. The purpose of this topic is to familiarize clinicians with the recent advances in diagnosis and management of such injuries.
