Abstract
The state of the art about a type of specialised resource with great historical and scientific value is presented: the astronomical documentation. First of all, the main types of astronomical resources are defined focusing on their historical evolution. Secondly, the result of a survey carried out between April and May 2014 about the astronomical collections in Spanish map libraries and archives is shown taking as a reference the IBERCARTO directory of 2012. Conclusions show that almost half of queried libraries and archives map have these type of documents, but disseminated in different collections. Moreover, around 70% of the institutions have catalogued all of their astronomical documentation and have used the classical encoding (MARC 21) and cataloguing standards (ISBD and ISAD(G)), although recent studies have shown that these standards are not the most suitable ones to describe it. Hence, a satisfactory scientific information retrieval is not achieved.

Summary
La Astronomía, una de las ciencias más antiguas que existen, es también una de las que más ha avanzado en los últimos años, debido a los grandes adelantos que están teniendo lugar en la construcción de nuevos y mejores instrumentos de observación, como son los potentes telescopios de los que se dispone actualmente (ESO, 2014; Harrison y otros, 2013). El propósito común era identificar la información científica más frecuentemente proporcionada por éstos y, como resultado de dichos trabajos, se desarrolló una propuesta de parámetros de descripción para cartas, atlas y catálogos de estrellas junto con una serie de directrices, para facilitar la identificación de estos parámetros en los recursos astronómicos. La mejora de la calidad de estos registros supone un paso más en el complejo proceso de descripción de este tipo de recursos altamente especializados, lo que proporciona una gran ayuda a astrónomos y astrofísicos a la hora de localizar determinados datos de interés en la documentación astronómica presente en otros centros diferentes a los astronómicos
