Abstract

The isotopic composition of tin in a variety of meteoritic and terrestrial samples has been studied. No evidence of significant variations resulting from inhomogeneities in Galactic or Solar System nucleosynthetic processes has been found. The elemental abundance of tin in fourteen iron, one stony iron and four chondritic meteorites was determined using the method of isotope dilution. The tin concentration was found to range from < 0.1 to 7.6 ppm, confirming earlier abundance data relating to tin in meteorites. The precision of isotopic abundance measurements by solid source mass spectrometry is adversely affected by mass fractionation. For polyisotopic elements, such as tin, this effect can be partly overcome by using the sample itself as an internal standard.
