Abstract

The effect of early and late injection of prostaglandin F 2α (PGF 2α) on induction of parturition in dairy goats was studied. Twenty-one multiparous Nubian goats were randomly divided into three groups: Group-E (early) was injected with PGF 2α at 07:00 h, Group-L (late) was injected with PGF 2α at 19:00 h and Group-C (control) injected with sterile saline solution (four does at 07:00 h and three at 19:00 h) at day 145 of gestation (estrus=day 0). The 15 mg of natural PGF 2α or 3 ml of saline was injected intramuscularly. The induction time of 31 h for Group-E and 33 h for Group-L were similar ( P>0.05), but significantly shorter than 96 h for Group-C. Kiddings occured between 11:00 and 15:30 h in Group-E, between 23:00 and 07:00 h in six of seven with only one at midday in Group-L and between 07:15 and 17:10 h in Group-C. Placental delivery of 1.5 h for Group-E, 2.3 h for Group-L and 1.6 h for Group-C were similar ( P>0.05). No dystocia or retained membranes were observed. All kids were born alive. It is concluded that time of PGF 2α administration affects the naturally circadian distribution of parturition in Nubian goats.
