Abstract
The relative timing of postvitellogenic oocyte changes in the ridgeback prawn ( Sicyonia ingentis) was studied using a simple ovarian biopsy technique. Prawn ovaries were biopsied by puncturing the dorsal body wall and ovary with a needle attached to a syringe containing crustacean Ringers. Oocytes were removed and staged microscopically. The technique had no significant effect on survival, number of spawns, time of spawning or egg quality compared with unsampled controls. The timing of the cortical specialization (CS) stage, the germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) stage and ovulation were studied using repeated ovarian biopsies. The mean (± SD) time from the initiation of the cortical specialization stage to spawning was 97 ± 53 h and 84 ± 22 h in two groups of animals subjected to repeated ovarian biopsies. Ovulation required less than a few hours. It was concluded that the frequency of cortical specialization stage oocytes was an accurate index of spawning activity.
