Abstract

Various analogies have been used to describe post Communist Russia, from post-Nazi Germany to China in the wake of the collapse of the Manchu dynsasty. The most appropriate comparison, in the view of the author, is with the Bolshevik revolution and the Russian civil war. Various structural similarities are described, including levels of criminality, alcoholism and disease. The election of President Putin is seen as a desire for stability in the face of growing disorder and the creation of necessary conditions for economic growth.
