Abstract
We discuss the gauge fixing and the quantization of a charged relativistic particle moving in an arbitrary electromagnetic background. A general result concerning explicitly time-dependent gauge choices is applied so as to treat both the temporal and light cone gauges. These examples allow some instructive comparisons to be drawn between the alternative techniques which can be used to tackle this general class of problem.
