Abstract
When compulsory treatment in the community was introduced into mental health legislation in November 2008 widespread concerns were expressed by interested parties that it would be overused. Figures released by the government, which suggest that more than 4,000 people are now subject to community treatment orders (CTOs), show that those fears were justified (pages 7 and 8).
