Abstract
Despite a massive injection of cash, the NHS remains in a parlous condition. Waiting lists are still far too long, hospitals are often dirty and infection prone, infant mortality and life expectancy rates compare unfavourably to many other European countries and so also do survival rates from many major illnesses. Doctors and nurses are demoralized. Once the envy of the world, the health service has lost its saintly, venerable veneer and become something of a sick joke.
