Abstract
We present time-of-flight quasielastic neutron scattering data with isotopic contrast on phason hopping in perfect icosahedral ${\mathrm{Al}}_{62}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{25.5}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{12.5}$ quasicrystal powder samples. In total one Fe jump on the time scale $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}/2.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5\ensuremath{\mu}$eV, two Cu jumps ( $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}/55$ and $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}/253\ensuremath{\mu}$eV), and a collective jump phenomenon [ $\ensuremath{\Elzxh}/(900\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}200\ensuremath{\mu}$eV)] involving all atomic species have now been identified. We also explain the unusual temperature dependence of the phason dynamics that has been universally observed in the past.
