Abstract

The time-resolved mode-mismatched thermal lens technique has been used to determine a precise value for the absolute thermal diffusivity of soda—lime glass (70.5 wt% SiO 2, 17.5 wt% Na 2O, 10 wt% CaO and 2 wt% Fe 2O 3). The thermal diffusivity was found to be (4.9±0.3) × 10 −3 cm 2/s which is in good agreement with the value obtained by photoacoustic spectrometry ((5.1±0.1) × 10 −3 cm 2/s). The technique is non-contacting and non-destructive.
