Abstract

A supersonic jet gas target arrangement has been designed and tested in high resolution lifetime measurements using the High Frequency Deflection technique. Rotational temperatures down to 15 K are obtained at target pressures up to 1 torr and a hundredfold decrease of distortions due to collisional quenching is observed as compared to ordinary static gas targets. These improvements enable registrations of almost rotationless molecular spectra at high intensities without collisional quenching which greatly extend the versatility of this time resolved technique.
