Abstract

Spatial ring-shaped distribution of atoms in magneto-optical traps can be produced when the Gaussian laser beams used in the trap are misaligned as in a race-track geometry. We use a new version of the time of flight technique to determine the temperature and velocity distribution of the atoms in the ring. We found results which are consistent with the Doppler theory of laser cooling.
