Abstract

A time-of-flight system for the mass identification of heavy ions has been set up and tested. The zero-time detector is based on the well known principle of accelerating secondary electrons from a thin foil onto a plastic scintillator. The properties of this detector and their dependence on various parameters are discussed. A standard Si detector is used to stop the ions. In test measurements with heavy ions at energies up to about 1 MeV per nucleon a time resolution of 0.5 ns and a mass resolution of 2% (fwhm) have been obtained.
