Abstract

In this paper a Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) for electromagnetic(EM) wave modulation in L-band is proposed. The presented time modulated FSS is designed for modulating electromagnetic (EM) waves reflected from it, to generate numerous sideband frequency components in the frequency spectrum of the modulated wave. The EM wave modulation is accomplished by changing the reflection properties of the FSS in time. The unit cell design of the presented time modulated FSS consists of metal strips loaded with PIN diodes. A reflection coefficient that varies with time is accomplished by using a periodic biasing signal on the PIN diodes. The modulation scheme is designed to mimic Doppler effect from a moving target. In the reflected wave frequency spectrum the sideband frequency components have more power than the incident frequency component.
