Abstract

Time jitter in a sampling and averaging system used for the analysis of pulses having similar shapes but varying amplitudes is discussed. An analytical treatment of the problem for a mathematically tractable special case is presented. For this special case, the analysis shows that the shape of the input pulse will be preserved by the averaging process despite the time jitter. The amplitude and time shift resulting from the averaging process are shown to be functions of the trigger level and the statistical distribution used for the amplitudes of the input pulses.
