Abstract

In this review, we summarize the three roles time can play in geographical research. The notion of time is mentioned first, along with three types of data involved in time geographical research. Then we introduce several research methods starting by the classical time geography methods, as well as how traditional geographic research methods deal with temporal issues. We also demonstrate several other methods, and highlight the great potential of latent trajectory model, survival analysis, and agent-based models in dealing with temporal issues in geographical research and in enriching the toolbox of time geography. The review concludes with recommendations for future research directions in regard to span and granularity of time measurements, tight integration of space and time, development of new metrics, models/tools, and data models, and the need to better handle imprecision of time measurement.
