Abstract

Among the different categories of time-frequency representations, the Wigner distribution has been shown to offer several advantages in the field of signal analysis. The properties of this mixed time-frequency function are reviewed and a discrete version of the Wigner distribution is detailed. Its applicability to the representation of damped sinusoids is illustrated by three typical examples including a comparison with results obtained by manual evaluation, spectral fitting, and time-domain analysis.
