Abstract

This book provides information on the serviceability analysis of concrete structures. The first chapter examines typical concrete strain magnitudes, effects of creep, shrinkage in concrete and the basic problem of time analyses. Chapter two gives a general description of elastic and inelastic deformation. The factors which affect this deformation are discussed; and methods for evaluating the creep and shrinkage characteristics of concrete under particular design conditions are given. Methods for the time analysis of structures are reviewed and compared in the next chapter. These include: the effective modulus method (emm); age adjusted effective modulus method (aemm); rate of creep method (rcm); improved dischinger method (idm); and the superposition step-by-step method (ssm). In chapter four time analyses are presented for a variety of structural cross sections containing at least one axis of symmetry. For each section type an elastic analysis using methods previously described is carried out. In the final chapter, similar analyses are made of members and structures. An appendix of the computer programs utilized, written in basic, is given.
