Abstract

The mechanism behind the paradoxical intensification of histochemically demonstrable sinusoidal ATP-ase activity during prolonged storage of immersion-fixed liver tissue has been investigated. It is concluded that the factor responsible for bile canalicular nucleosidephosphatase activity diffuses along the intercellular spaces towards the sinusoid unless it is precipitated by appropriate fixation. Apparently only adequate perfusion fixation is satisfactory in this respect.
