Abstract

Emotional reactivity following septal lesions in albino rats was investigated under four different postoperative handling conditions. When handled once a day, reactivity returned to normal within 6 days. However, if the animals were handled 12 times during the first postoperative day, they remained hyperreactive. When left undisturbed for 6 days following surgery, septal animals showed hyperreactivity on the first handling, but returned to normal levels within a few hr. It was suggested that dissipation of the septal syndrome is dependent on the distribution of handling rather then the amount.
