Abstract

This study's purpose was to determine whether albuterol administration changed time course adaptations to strength gain in persons undergoing resistance exercise. Study treatments were randomized and double blinded. Subjects performed 3 maximal sets of 10 repetitions of isokinetic knee extensions with coupled concentric-eccentric contractions at 45° · sec–1 twice a week for 9 weeks. Full placebo (n = 9) and albuterol (n = 13) (16 mg a day) administration began at Week 3. Repeated measures 2 × 9 MANOVA and a priori planned comparisons revealed statistical significance for 10 strength variables. Four variables showed a time effect. Interactions were noted for 6 variables, with subjects given albuterol displaying superior values. Results indicate that training with albuterol hastened time course changes in strength gain compared to training with a placebo. Albuterol and isokinetic exercise may hasten the reacquisition of strength in persons who have been ill or injured.
