Abstract

Two paired-associate experiments concerned with extinction and recovery studied MMFR after 0 and 24-hour retention intervals. With the A-B, A-C paradigm, Exp. F examined the forward association, while Exp. B examined the backward association with the A-B, C-B paradigm. After MMFR, Ss undertook stimulusresponse matching. While both experiments showed unlearning, there was no evidence in either experiment for List 1 absolute recovery. Contrary to the notion that associations are symmetrical, difficult List-1 items were unlearned more readily than easy items in Exp. F but not in Exp. B. Matching was essentially perfect for all conditions, except that List 1 dropped at 24 hours in Exp. B. Since unlearning disappeared when the responses were supplied, it appeared that unlearning was due to a loss of response availability.
