Abstract

A weakly ionized plasma column is investigated in the presence of a finite amplitude instability. The theory of Holter and Johnson is extended to include a finite amplitude m = 2 mode instability. From the zero harmonic solution to the macroscopic equations, the time‐averaged particle density is obtained. Computations are performed on a digital computer to determine the form of the particle density profile in the presence of a helical, m = 2, and mixed mode instability. The form of the profile is found to have a strong dependence on the magnitude and polarity of the amplitude factors.
