Abstract

The predicted resources of Russian bauxites are evaluated at more than 404 mln t, the most part of which is concentrated within Middle Timan and South Timan bauxite districts (66%). This work reviews geology, mineralogy, genesis and processing of bauxites from Timan region (Russia). The following methods were used for the investigation of bauxites from the Vezhayu-Vorykvinskoe deposit: X-ray diffractometry, X-ray fluorescent analysis, Mossbauer spectroscopy, petrographical analysis, thermography, chemical analysis and others, complexing which allowed receiving reliable mineralogical–technological characteristics of both bauxite ore, and its real constituents. Alongside with classical methods of bauxite investigation, we used the non-traditional methods of small-angle scattering. Our studies showed that the mineral composition of bauxites varied within rather large limits; with the ratio of main rock-forming minerals, it was possible to determine five mineral types of ore. It was found that the bauxites from the deposit contained a large scope of admixture elements including rare metals. The review of bauxite concentration methods was given.
