Abstract

Crystals grown from 99.999+ per cent zinc and zone refined zinc were subjected to static and dynamic shear loading. Tilt boundaries in crystals of zone refined zinc move at static stresses of approximately 3 lb/in 2, while stresses of approximately 30 lb/in 2 will not move boundaries in 99.999+ per cent purity zinc. The stress required to initiate boundary motion within a time interval of 17 × 10 −6 sec in a dynamic test is about 100 times greater than the stress required in a static test. The boundary velocity increases linearly with increasing dynamic stress.
