Abstract

AbstractConventional tillage methods were compared with no tillage systems for the control of root and stalk rot disease of maize caused by Macrophomina phaseolina and Fusarium moniliforme in a field with a recent history of high stalk rot incidence in south‐western Nigeria. The incidence of stalk rot was significantly less under no‐tillage practices than in conventionally tilled plots during the twoseason trial. Application of paraquat or burning of crop residue had no apparent influence ond isease incidence. None of the treatments affected the severity of the diseases.
