Abstract

Investigations were made on the chemical, mechanical, non-destructive, and corrosive properties of welded joints of 1 mm thick Nb and Ta sheets that were either electronbeam welded in a high vacuum or TIG welded in a controlled welding chamber filled with 1 atm argon gas containing an impurity gas of air, nitrogen, oxygen, or hydrogen. The electron-beam melted Nb specimen showed no porosity with both welding methods. However, sintered Nb specimens showed greater porosities with electron-beam welding. The sintered Ta specimens showed no porosity both with TIG and electron-beam welding. Other properties are also listed. (P.C.H.)
