Abstract

Studies supporting iconic memory as informational persistence (rather than neural or visual persistence) have been based on brief presentations of meaningful verbal stimuli. In a nonverbal study, 12 subjects had to replicate 100-msec. tachistoscopic presentations of tick-tack-toe in combinations of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 X's and O's in two conditions, incomplete games (“draws”) and complete games. M correct responses for complete games were 87.9% ( SD = 8.1) compared to 79.8% ( SD = 8.7) for incomplete games, which provides nonverbal support for an informational persistence definition of iconic memory.
