Abstract

Observation of the child when coughing, the cessation of the cough when distracted, the daytime only occurrence, and the barky honking character will serve to make the diagnosis. Successful treatment includes careful explanation of the dynamics of the cough, reassurance that the patient is not faking or malingering, and suggestion therapy that the patient can control the cough and thereby break the cycle. Failures with this approach can be treated successfully by swaddling in a sheet from armpits to hips for 3 days. Four typical case histories are presented.
