Abstract

SUMMARY Data on percentual uptake of radioactive iodine by the thyroid and on urinary stable iodide excretion under homeostatic conditions were collected from reports from seven geographical areas. An analysis was performed for the structural relationship between these two random variables. It is concluded that under homeostatic conditions the thyroid operates in such a manner that the thyroidal stable iodide intake is greater at the lower values of percentual radioactive uptake occurring in geographical areas of sufficient or excess iodine. The adjustment of the gland to the iodine environment is thus incomplete.
