Abstract
A scintillation counter adapted to the determination of thyroid I131 uptakes in the unanesthetized dog has been described. The dog was shown to have a relatively slow rate of accumulation of I131 by the thyroid, but a total uptake of the same order of magnitude as man and the rabbit if the dog was maintained on a dietary intake of 70 μg of iodine or less per day. Hypophysectomy markedly depressed the thyroidal uptake and blood I131 clearance rate, and TSH administration elevated the rate of uptake and release.
