Abstract

Young Pekin ducklings received three or six lead shot which were dropped down the throat of each bird. Lead shot recovered from the gizzards of the ducklings at necropsy were smaller and more irregular in shape than when initially introduced at the start of the investigation. Although the rate of erosion was similar in both groups receiving lead shot, the total amount of lead eroded was greater in the birds receiving the greater number of shot. Thyroid weight and 24-hr thyroidal uptake of 125I were increased while serum protein-bound 125I was reduced. Chromatographic analyses of thyroid hydrolysates revealed a depression in iodothyronine labeling.
